How to Keep Your 2013 New Year’s Resolutions NOW…
That’s NOT a typo — I am talking about your New Year’s Resolutions for 2013 and not 2012. You could try to keep them again this year – but the reason so many New Year’s Resolutions fail has much to do with what happens during the year and not the resolutions made on the 31st of December…
One of our country’s most remarkable man, Jon Huntsman Sr., conducts business the old-fashion way. And before you start thinking it is difficult to teach an old dog new tricks, we challenge you to try teaching a young dog old tricks. Especially a dog that believes he – or she – has all the answers and needs not to be humble, needs not to have one set of ethics in life, needs not to have value to his own word. These are the very qualities Jon conducts his business as well as conducts his personal life. He has closed multi-million dollar deals with a handshake.
He did what?
A business deal he had completed was the sale of part of one of his businesses for $58 million. The buyer’s lawyers were slow in completing their work and 6 months later, when the legalities were complete, the business was worth $210 million. The new owner wanted to split the difference with Jon – $76 million between the two of them. Jon refused – he shook his hand for $58 million and was not expecting a penny more. That is just how Jon conducts business.
Jon Huntsman’s reputation is extremely strong – if he says he will deliver on something, you can count on it as already done. How strong? He was an advisor during one of the worst security situations at the White House during the Nixon administration. And everyone, whether they were for or against Nixon, said the same thing – there is no way Jon would have known about this situation otherwise he would not be here or would have done something about it. Makes you think about the others that knew something but let it happen anyway by means of omission. Most of us cannot keep something in confidence without gossiping it to someone – once you share, trust is no longer there.
Our word – and the value we place on it — is displayed in our actions. If we say we are going to meet someone at 8 p.m., what is the reflection on our work, our values, when we arrive at 8:30? Or 8:10? The value of our word has declined and future meetings will be measured as such. There are many that will say, “Oh that’s alright” and provide an excuse. Someone of Jon’s integrity wouldn’t shake hands with someone he knew he could not trust. Yet many will admire what he represents. If we can’t address the small stuff, how will we handle the more important and critical issues? Compromise is not one of the values of integrity.
Until any of us look at ourselves and the values we represent and misrepresent, any New Year’s resolution doesn’t stand a chance – we haven’t addressed our own will and self-discipline before the end of the year.
So my recommendation is this – instead of listing a bunch of resolutions that you won’t keep anyway, don’t make any with anyone except yourself. Make a special effort to deliver what you do what you say you are going to do — and when you say you are going to do it. Make sure you will help out your fellow-man, even when you think you don’t have much (before Jon’s wealth, he would leave his lunch money in a neighbor’s mailbox as the neighbor was worse off than his own family was). Make sure you spend some time alone in your home every day, if only for 5 or 10 minutes, no electronics, no pen and paper, nothing, just sitting still – and reflect on where you have come from and where you want to go. Not with your life, but with your values. And stop having more than one set of ethics — you can’t be more than one person, you can’t be someone else — besides, everyone else is already spoken for!
Your life will take care of its own, once your values are in the right place.
Be rich in your actions — that is a wealth that can never be bought by anyone and is admired by everyone.
