How Cloud Service Interruptions Are Only Symbolic
It’s More Than an Interruption, it is IT
Cloud service interruptions are symbolic of what is not working and provides conclusive evidence that something was overlooked, ignored, sacrificed, traded, or just simply not known way before the interruption occurred.
They are also symptoms of a much greater problem (sorry about the symbolic thing, it has a higher Google rating then symptoms )
As many of you are aware, a few weeks ago, storms in Virginia knocked out Amazon Web Services data centers, interrupting service for many sites including giants like Instagram, Netflix & Pinterest.
There was at least one service that was not impacted while the others were scrambling to maintain damage control.
How One Decision Made a Huge Difference
So how did a company called Skimlinks remain in full service while Amazon, Instagram, Netflix, Pinterest were recovering from the storms?
Skmlinks uses an elastic load-based server infrastructure – meaning the load on one server is automatically shifted to another server when it detects a problem or overload situation.
This allows them to leverage multiple data centers around the world instead of within a jurisdiction and/or sovereignty.
This allows Skimlinks to protect their customers sites by making sure they keep Skimlinks efficiently running.
A Repeated Scenario Will Grow
Now, change this scenario from an automated affiliate marketing company to something much more important — such as national defense, communications, Internet availability…
You see why making the wrong decision, even if not known at the time a better option is available, can have detrimental affects on the bottom line of a company.
These companies have enough resources that their outages were actually localized — but what if there are repeat scenarios in multiple areas?
The Right Focus Will Bring the Right Questions
We can’t protect ourselves from everything but with things changing at a very fast pace, we need to be learning what the right questions are as well as what are our best options.
Where we focus is where we end up – what we tolerate, we can’t change…
Not asking the right questions could leave you battling with storms – like Amazon, Instagram, Netflix & Pinterest.
Asking the right questions could leave you operating while others are scrambling – like Skimlinks.
Every company faces options when planning changes.
Options Have Differences and Those Differences Have a Value
Each option has a difference — and that difference has a value to it, both realized and unrealized.
If we don’t learn from the experience – and expense – of others, the why bother having blogs? having forums or conferences? documenting business processes? establishing best practices? enforcing certifications?
In our fast pace world, there is more at stake than just one company surviving the storm while others are scrambling.
The entire scenario says we need to step back and make an inventory of all the tools we have and assess which ones are not working as well as become innovative with coming up with tools that will work much better than the ones that do now.
Anyone settling for the status-quo will find themselves looking at taillights for a very long time while others have learned to ask the right questions as well as know the value of the differences of their options.
