Saving Your Butt When Technology Fails
Send to KindleOK, perhaps not the FUN part of technology.
Late last week, several of the PHP files used to drive any WordPress blog as well as the plugins used by our blog went south… took a vacation… they just didn’t want to work.
Heck, they had nearly 5 weeks without anyone playing with them from this side of the fence – for all we know, they were just trying to get our attention.
Whatever the case, we had to take our site down and at that moment, we had absolutely no idea for how long as we had no idea how bad the problem was and how quickly we could resolve it.
We did discover the problem during the weekend and are resolving this with the vendor.
But once we had everything related to the problem addressed, we were VERY surprised at just how quickly we could get everything back up and running – from dead nothing!
Being Prepared is Key
How many of us do this?
How many of us have started this after a substantial loss of information and/or time?
With more than 4 years invested into this blog, we weren’t about to take any chances.
We had searched for a mechanism that would backup both our blog and the database that is associated with it (most backup systems will overlook the database).
We also had to be sure it verified the back up BEFORE storing it and completing its tasks.
We found this in a plugin created by Daniel Hüsken called BackWPup — one of 4 plugins that he has created (we haven’t tried the others yet, all non-related to backups).
- Database Backup
- WordPress XML Export
- Optimize Database
- Check\Repair Database
- File Backup
- Backups in zip, tar, tar.gz, tar.bz2 format
- Store backup to
- Folder
- FTP Server
- Amazon S3
- Google Storage
- Microsoft Azure (Blob)
- RackSpaceCloud
- DropBox
- SugarSync
- Send Log/Backup by Email
Oh, Happy Days!
Which means you should occasionally test your Backups.
We were hesitant with the no warranty issue — but we saw that Daniel maintains an active participation in his support for the plugin.
Give all that, we gave his plugin a go and have been very happy with our decision.
We usually contribute to the plugins we use, with Daniel we provide an additional contribution each time we have been
Daniel’s plugin offers security, flexibility (partial-to-full backups), automation provided by scheduling, and for the database there is validation, optimization, and repair. And what sold us isn’t in his plugin but is a result of using his plugin – integrity.
If you own a blog, we hope you give his plugin a consideration, use it, and provide a contribution.
Like us, you will be glad you did! Click here to visit Daniel’s site.
