Windows Phone 8: Everything You Need to Know

Send to Kindle

Microsoft recently unveiled their next generation smartphone operating system.

And although we already have a clear blow by blow of its new and improved features, we are not exactly sure what to expect from these devices as well as those who have a Windows phone now.

Let’s take a closer look at this new mobile device…

First Impressions

The best things that this mobile phone can give in its hardware are multi-core processors, near-filed communication, new screen resolutions, and expandable memory slots.

Microsoft has redesigned the start screen of their mobile device so that it is wider.

You will also have the freedom to resize individual tiles in the start screen as well pick from new color schemes.

Users are now also able to enjoy app purchases, storage for cards and account information, and many more.

Updates can now be done over the air along with improved gaming, media playback, networking, and security.

New Windows Phones that run in Windows 8 will ship in the US come autumn. Microsoft merely said “holiday season” so it can mean anytime from late September to a few days before Christmas.

Upgrades

The bad news for Windows Phone 7.5 users is that they will not be able to upgrade their handsets.

There is, however, an upcoming Windows Phone 7.8 update for those who are using the older versions which should bring some of the aesthetics of the Windows Phone 8, including the updated Live Tiles UI.

Version Expectations

It is expected that the 5 biggest partners of Microsoft – HTC, Huawei, Nokia, Samsung, and ZTE – will be making the phones.

However, there are rumors circulating that Windows might team up with other manufacturers.

The high-end Windows phones will have the Qualcomm’s dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor that can be tunes for up to 1.7GHz clock speed.

Those that are on the entry-level, however, will have slower processors but will come with a very friendly price tag.

Skype

If you are curious as to whether the Windows phones will have a native Skype support, you are in for some disappointment because it will not.

You can, however, download Skype as Microsoft has laid down the foundation for third-party apps such as Skype in a way that they can be integrated in the phone-call menu.

NFC

For the very first time, Microsoft will support NFC. It comes with three parts…

  1. Tap + Share to share URLs with other NFC devices and read a tag on business cards, posters, and so on
  2. A secure SIM card so that users can enable mobile payments
  3. A wallet hub where you can store sensitive information on accounts and loyalty cards, among many others
Voice Activation

One of the most talked about features of the Windows Phone 8 is that users will be able to speak commands to their app. With their voice-recognition software, users cab launch, pause, resume, and stop media with the use of their voice.

This feature, however, faces two problems. The first is that voice interpretations can be spotty and the second is that it will drain the battery.
